A war of words…
Assistant editor Annie McGuire has just been given the assignment of a lifetime.
Her boss, the Senior Editor of fiction at McMahon Martin Publishing no less, has chosen Annie to edit one-time, blockbuster author James Raymond’s new book.
This is the chance Annie has been waiting for and she’s desperate to prove her worth as a serious editor.
It’s time to make the leap to senior editor, after all if she doesn’t someone else surely will.
With her qualifications and experience, nothing could go wrong… right?
...wrong!
It turns out Annie is totally oblivious to the details and politics of how the motorbike riding, egomaniac author was enticed away from his old publisher.
When two ambitious chief editors of opposing New York publishing houses go to war, there is bound to be collateral.
But will Annie’s career take the full force of the damage?
With rumours swirling that Raymond’s new manuscript is a flop and his own agent publically voicing his concern at every opportunity, does Annie have any hope of turning this around?
Or is Annie’s own story destined to come to a tragic end…?
Set in the cut throat world of publishing, Cutting Words is a heartfelt tale about never giving up on your dreams.

If you've tried writing a book, this is interesting from the point of what goes into writing and the publishing industry. From a fiction stand point, it may not have held my interest as it was slow moving and the characters not highly engaged or engaging. Her issues with her ex-fiancé came and went with little depth, disappearing for much of the book. Conflicts were surface deep, but as I said, it was interesting to me to see how the industry operated, according to her book anyway. It could have been more engaging had she gone deeper into the characters and conflict.Product details

'Good editors don't grow on trees' and this is true both in real life and in fiction. I ended up reading this book attracted by the subject the publishing industry, which you rarely find featured in novels.
Focused on the competition between publishing houses and the dramatic conflict between a super-star writer whose entire talent seems to have been lost after the first best-seller hit the shelves ten years ago and his ambitious talented editor, this book is an easy yet pleasant read. You can read it as an humorous account of the publishing industry - including the promotional tricks and the marketing twists - and the fate of the bestselling author. It also offers, in a literary form, a story about what may happen with a manuscript from the final draft until it hits the shelves.
Maybe I am wrong but it is one of the few - good - books which covers this topic and it is doing it in a very smart way, including the fierce competition between publishing houses. As one of the characters noticed '(...) ten thousand books have been written on how the CIA operates and next to none on how publishing actually works, from the inside, and that's because we know how to keep secrets'.
The book has all the ingredients of a comfortable read interesting characters, good writing, a bit of suspense and a story which flows interestingly until the end. I particularly loved the ambitious young editor Annie McGuire, who dared to go deep into the manuscript of the famous author and whose editing will bring him the fame back, although completely by mistake. Unfortunately, she is excessively described through her Englishness, an attribute used to answer questions and doubts about her, which is not a very creative choice.
It is a read recommended to both young editors and publishers, as well as to anyone in love with books, curious to discover unknown stories about their favorite hobby.

Really liked this book. Very good read. Great story with many realistically drawn and colorful characters, although I would have liked the main protagonist's character to have been more developed. But perhaps that was deliberate and Annie was designed to be just a cork trying to stay afloat as the waves of the words and actions of the power people tried to drown her.
I'd still give it six stars for excellent grammar, punctuation, sentence and story structure, which crown the good story.
And as we're all readers here, I expect that everyone will appreciate the look into the cutthroat business of publishing and marketing.
It is highly likely that the author is an editor who is using the ironic pen name of PALaver who has found no herself frustrated by the more aggressive and outspoken personalities who run the show.
Whether I'm right or wrong about that, it should give you some insight into the tone of the book.
Highly recommend.
I'm so glad I took a chance on this (at the time unreviewed) book. I thoroughly enjoyed it! Well done, little mouse!
i really enjoyed this novel. It's a great story with unexpected plot turns and protagonist with whom I could really empathize. I also enjoyed the contrast in the female characters between the hardened Sr. Editors and the innocence of Annie, who by the end of the story had learned how to play the publishing game. I definitely recommend this book.
I read this book in one sitting, as I really became fascinated with the drama/loss/rewards of attempting to get a book accepted and published. It's one I wouldn't mind reading again! This is one time I really wish it were an actual hardcopy book rather than an e-book, as there are sections I'd love to return to and mark for future reference.
Outstanding book - very well written - a page turner. I can't wait to read other books by this author. The story flows and has all sorts of surprises. I would have never thought that a book about authors and publishing houses could be so darned interesting. Great book!
This book, an interesting look into the world of publishing, was much better than I expected considering I got it as a free download through one of my book e-newsletters. Lots of suspense and lots about insider machinations to secure the next blockbuster novel. Especially enjoyed reading about the editing process.
